North West Community Campus, Dumfries and Galloway

What is this?

North West Community Campus established a small group of pupils to work to gain YPI funding through the Your Community Fund project.

Who is this for?

For all with an interest in Scottish education.

What we did:

NWCC established a small group of pupils to work to gain YPI funding through the Your Community Fund project. 3 entries were permitted from each school entering. NWCC were the only school to win 3 prizes of £4000 to give to local charities. We therefore won £12,000 which was passed on to charities supporting people through Covid-19.

Who we involved:

The Wood Foundation funded the project. S3 pupils that had been working on the original YPI project were invited to take part. 3 local charities were involved.

The difference it made:

The difference to the pupils since the completion of the challenge has been huge. For pupils this was mainly the development of personal qualities as well as skills required to complete the task. Pupils confidence in specific tasks has grown but so has their ability to be successful and know they can make a difference. The competition required the pupils to use online resources and systems such as Teams. This was a challenge, but once they were able, they transferred these skills and were able to access and produce work for other subjects. The same can be said for the staff! The difference to the charities was substantial, with the donation of a large sum of money, they were able to provide support to a greater number of people. The charities and the school have developed better links and this will be useful over the course of the year in creating understanding of the work which charities do.

What we will do differently in the future:

As this was the first major task that required completion online it was certainly a challenge for myself and other staff. The process allowed me the opportunity to attempt to use online resources and systems such as Teams in a more relaxed way. This allowed me the opportunity to share good practice with other staff members and prepare myself for teaching Higher classes. My confidence has risen and therefore I am able to use such skills as they are required in the long term.
