Education Scotland Young People's Strategic Panel (2022)

Cover for Young People's Strategic Panel ReportEducation Scotland aims to put learners at the centre of all we do. In 2021-22, Education Scotland worked with Young Scot and 12 young people aged between 13 and 17 from across Scotland to create our Young People’s Strategic Panel. The purpose of the Panel was to improve how youth voices are engaged within Education Scotland and help to embed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in our strategic work.

Over course of the 18-month project, The Panel explored the work of Education Scotland through their own lived experiences and collaboration with our staff. The Panel then identified their priorities and tested out their solutions, before producing a series of recommendations based around the following themes:

  1. Training for Educators
  2. Stigmatised Topics in Education
  3. The UNCRC in Education
  4. Website and Social Media
  5. Inspections
  6. Youth Engagement, Feedback and Concerns

The Panel want their recommendations to inspire Education Scotland to be more involved in the day-to-day lives of children and young people, listening to their voices directly and making proactive changes to the education system on their behalf.

The Panel’s recommendations are informing our current corporate planning and will also help to inform the development of a new education agency and education inspectorate.
